HORRIBLE HAPPENINGS 2016

2016 is a SUPER-SPECIAL year for HORRIBLE SCIENCE fans.  It’s the TWENTIETH anniversary of the series.  Yes, it’s been 2 x 10 years since the squishiest science series in the known universe BLASTED onto the book stands.  And that means every event is going to turn into a CELEBRATION!!!!!

JANUARY

Nick writes a new book called 88 1/2 SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS.

Wednesday 13th January – Scholastic publishes a new version of the Horrible Science of YOU entitled THE BRAIN-BOGGLING BODY BOOK.

Tuesday 26 January – Nick Arnold at Truro School, Cornwall.  NICK SAYS:  What a lovely start to 2016 – I visited an amazing school and got treated to a lovely lunch!  I’m still fizzing after entertaining you all in Years 1 and 2 – and thanks also to our great Teacher Challenge volunteers!  Happy Reading everyone!

Wednesday 27 January – Nick Arnold at Truro Prep School, Cornwall.  NICK SAYS:  What a great school!  I’m presenting lots of events this year but I don’t think I’ll get asked any better and more thoughtful questions – thanks so much for them.  Oh yes – and I did promise to tell you my favorite football team so here it is – it’s … ENGLAND!!!!!  Well, you did ask!

FEBRUARY

NICK ARNOLD the historian (that’s me by the way!) wins international fame for discovering a brand-new ancient battlefield.  It’s the Battle of Northam – the second big battle of the Norman Conquest.  (Everyone’s heard of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 but now Nick’s found the sequel – and historians everywhere are busy rewriting the history books!)  NICK SAYS:  It was great fun chatting to the TV and radio and newspapers!  History is AMAZING – especially when you can find out new things!

Saturday 13 February – Sunday 21 February – HORRIBLE SCIENCE HALF-TIME FAMILY FUN at The National Media Museum, Bradford.  ROLL UP FOR FIVE FREE MINI-SHOWS, exclusive Horrible Science Comfy Corner and AWESOME IMAX Film Shows!  NICK SAYS:  I had some awesome reports from sessions in Bradford – don’t worry if you missed them.  There’s repeat performances in March and April!!!!

Monday 22 February – Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles rock Swansea in the WORLD’S BIGGEST BOOK BASH.  NICK SAYS:  Tony and I had a great time in Swansea – thanks to all of you in that HUGE AND HAPPY audience!  What’s more we launched our new FREE HORRIBLE SCIENCE BOOK – Fearsome Facts.  You can download it from the home page!

Wednesday 24 February – 23 March – Horrible Science School Shows at The National Media Museum, Bradford.  NICK SAYS:  It’s all free to schools – so why not talk your teacher into taking you?

MARCH

Tuesday 1 March – Nick Arnold at Rushden, Northamptonshire.  NICK SAYS:  I had a wonderful time at Rushden Academy – I met some very enthusiastic librarians and teachers and spoke to chatty and excitable Year 7’s and thoughtful and happy Year 8’s.  Hopefully I inspired quite few young writers and scientists.  MESSAGE TO ALL OF YOU – please carry on supporting your school library!

Monday 7 March – Sunday 13 March – Nick Arnold at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  NICK SAYS:  I was signing books for FIVE HOURS at all my events – I’m amazed my writing hand hasn’t fallen off!  Thank you so much for coming to my events and being part of such a wonderful audience and for supporting such a FANTASTIC FESTIVAL!

Thursday 17 March – Friday 18 March – Nick Arnold tours Libraries in Perth and Kinrosshire, Scotland.  NICK SAYS: TWO incredible days and FOUR wonderful schools – each one with a super spacious modern Library.  I’m THRILLED you all enjoyed my shows – thanks to all my wonderful student and teacher volunteers.  DO PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY (and don’t forget to borrow lots of HORRIBLE SCIENCE books!)

Friday 25 March – Sunday 10 April – HORRIBLE SCIENCE HOLIDAY FAMILY FUN at The National Media Museum, Bradford.  Yes – Horrible Science is back with super-squishy yucky bits and FOUR GREAT FREE SHOWS to enjoy!  NICK SAYS:  How good is that?!

APRIL

Friday 8th April – Nick Arnold at the Cambridge Festival of Literature.  NICK SAYS:  My nearly-sold out show took place a stone’s throw away from my old school – so naturally I wanted to check if it was really a stone’s throw by throwing stones!  But I decided not to as I might get detention (can they still do that after you’ve left school?)  Anyway I had a SUPER-MARVELLOUS day and the wonderful organizers say they have never heard an audience ROARING WITH LAUGHTER so much!

Sunday 10 April – Friday 22 April – Nick Arnold in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.  NICK SAYS:  My brain is still buzzing from the effects of nine (it was meant to be ten) stupendous schools in one hot fun-filled trip!  Here’s what happened:

Sunday 10 April – an exciting trip across the desert to Al Ain School.  Sorry for being late guys – the taxi driver didn’t know the way!  Thanks to everyone for your very warm and friendly welcome for a weary author!

Monday 11 April – Al Muna Primary – another friendly welcome with some really enthusiastic volunteers and questioners – thank you one and all!

Tuesday 12 April – Al Yasmina School – this is a super-grand great big school.  I was super-impressed with everything, especially my super-keen audiences!

Wednesday 13 April – Al Bateen School – another super-friendly school, in a lovely building.  This one has its own water feature in the courtyard.  I loved it!

Thursday 14 April – The Pearl Primary – if I were a teacher this is the sort of school I would like to teach at.  Lovely students (thanks everyone) and friendly staff.  I didn’t want to leave!

Sunday 17 April – Al Mushrif Primary – what a really nice school you are.  I especially enjoyed your school library and meeting everyone.  Good Luck with the new building!

Monday 18th April – British International School – an amazing school on the edge of a desert with the most luxurious canteens ever.  I especially loved presenting my History Talk for Year 7.

Tuesday 19th April – Gems Cambridge International School – they had to cancel.  Sorry you didn’t get your paperwork done in time – maybe another year?!

Wednesday 20th April – American Community School – a lovely, friendly, smart school – with wonderful welcoming staff and students.  Thanks so much for a GREAT DAY!

Thursday 21st April – Gems American Academy – what an AWESOME way to end the tour – with a warm and friendly welcome from a great school.  And the noisiest most fun-loving audience of all!

Tuesday 26th April – Nick Arnold at Lady Joanna Thornhill School, Wye, Kent.  NICK SAYS:  I really enjoyed visiting your friendly and fantastic school.  Thanks to all the staff and children for being so welcoming and making it such a memorable day for everyone!

MAY

Saturday 14th May – Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles at the Barnes Childrens’ Festival of Literature, 6.30 pm Kitson Hall.  NICK SAYS:  Fantastic sold-out event at a lovely friendly family-friendly festival!  THANK-U to everyone – and thanks also to Tony for his wonderful drawing session just before my part of the show!

JUNE

Thursday 2nd June – The new Horrible Science book – The Slimy Timeline Sticker Book hits the streets with a squishy thud.  NICK SAYS:  You can order your copy now online or at every GREAT bookshop!

Friday 17th June – Nick Arnold that’s the famous historian, not the famous author is star speaker at the Battlefields Trust AGM, Brighton.  NICK SAYS:  History isn’t about facts – it’s about detective work and discovery.  The more you know the more fun it is!

Tuesday 28th June – Nick Arnold at the Monmouth Literary Festival speaks on his newly discovered battlefield (see February above):  NICK SAYS:  I did two really interesting talks to two really interested audiences – answered great questions and met some lovely members of staff, special thanks to Mrs Lingham for being so welcoming.  Some volunteers dressed up as 11th century warriors and some teachers were made into slaves but only for a short while!

JULY

Saturday 9th July – Nick Arnold leads a History Walk for Hildsvin Education Re-enactment group.  NICK SAYS:  I am really looking forward to meeting these guys and learning more about history from them!

Wednesday 13th July – Nick Arnold presents a History talk to Probus, Bideford, Devon.  NICK SAYS:  I’m really happy to doing more history talks this year – they are fun and interesting and exciting.

Friday 15th July – Nick Arnold leads a History Walk for the Devonshire Association.  NICK SAYS:  History is all around us – we just need eyes to see it.  It’s like being a detective and time traveller all in one!

AUGUST

Sunday 21st August – Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh, 2 pm.  NICK SAYS:  Edinburgh is always lovely and special and I can’t wait to come back another year!

Monday 22nd August – Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles present a schools event at the Edinburgh  International Book Festival, 1.30 pm.  NICK SAYS: It was BIG AND BRASH and exciting – and what’s more it had record numbers for an Edinburgh schools event!

 

SEPTEMBER

Sunday 25th September – Nick Arnold at Appledore Book Festival, north Devon, 6 pm.  NICK SAYS:  This is the 10th Anniversary of the Festival I founded and directed for five years.  I’m so thrilled at how big and brilliant it is and and I am thrilled and honoured to be part of this year’s celebrations!

OCTOBER

Saturday 15th October – Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles at the Cheltenham Festival of Literature.  NICK SAYS:  Cheltenham is one of the REALLY BIG festivals and it’s always an honour to be invited.  It was a great sold-out show with Tony De Saulles and an equally GREAT audience – thanks for coming!

NOVEMBER

Thursday 3rd November – Nick Arnold at Ark Chamberlain Academy, Birmingham.  NICK SAYS:  This school has had the MASSIVE MAKEOVER treatment since my last visit in 2012 and has even more fantastic facilities  but the staff and students are as AMAZING as ever.  THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR A GREAT DAY!

Saturday 5th – Sunday 6th November – Nick Arnold at Winchester Science Centre, Hampshire.  NICK SAYS:  . If you live in Hampshire don’t miss this fantastic SCIENCE CENTRE.  I had HUGE FUN exploring the hands-on Science exhibits and putting on FOUR GREAT SHOWS!

Saturday 12th – Nick Arnold at the Looe Festival, Cornwall.  NICK SAYS:  Stop grinning you ‘horrible lot’ – I said at the LOOE festival not at the LOO festival!  Mind you there might be Horrible Toilet jokes in this family Horrible Science show!

Friday 18th – Saturday 19th November – Nick Arnold at the Folkestone Festival of Literature.  NICK SAYS:  I am going to be BUSY at Folkestone – am I looking forward to it?  YESSSSS – is an under-statement!

2017
